Ann Demeulemeester was born in Belgium in 1959. She studied fashion design at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp in 1978-1981. She became a member of the Antwerp Six Designer Group representing avant-garde style Her work is influenced by the gothic, punk, and Japanese styles; she worked with artist Jime Dine and also inspired by singer Patti Smith, Jackson Pollock and her husband and photographer Patrick Robyn. She avoids ornament and colour in favour of close concentration to detail and unusual mixing of fabrics bot for men- and womens-wear.
Her own label operates stores in Antwerp, Hong Kong, Tokyo, New York.
