French fashion designer born in 1933 in Aix-en-Provence. In 1951-1954, Emanuel worked in his father’s tailoring business. In 1955 he moved to Paris to work as a stylist, 3 years later he got job at Balenciaga's and then at Couregges. He opened his own coutoure house in 1965 with Swiss artist Sonja Knapp who later became his wife. Then his business expanded worldwide, created also menswear collection, a less expensive line, opened numerous boutiques and made several licensing deals including perfumes. Rich, boldly printed fabrics became his hallmark. His talent has been recognized by several awards, eg Dallas Fashion Award 1995,1996. In 2005, Ungaro retired and sold the label to businessman Asim Abdullah for $84 million.
