Born in Florence in 1881, Guccio Gucci spent his teenage years working in London. Influenced by the fashion of the upper class, he returned home and founded the house of Gucci in 1921. Initially, he mostly sold classically styled leather goods. As his business expanded he made it a family enterprise, employing his three sons. During World War II the company needed to expand its horizon due to the shortage of leather. After the turbulent decade of the 80s, Gucci reestablished itself as one of the leading fashion brand in the world. Gucci closely collaborates with UNICEF on women's empowerment. There is a museum dedicated to Gucci's work in Florence. The brand's current creative director is Alessandro Michele (the previous was Frida Giannini till end 2014).
