Slimane was born in Paris in 1968. After discovering photography he also started designing his own clothes. He later became an apprentice at a men's designer. Throughout his career Hedi worked in menswear exclusively; he had worked for YSL and subsequently was asked to head design house Jil Sander. Instead, he took the position of creative director of menswear at Dior in 2001. During his time at Dior he also dressed female celebrities and created stage wear for musicians. In 2007 he left because he wanted to maintain the integrity of his own label, so he returned to his photographic endeavors. He has published numerous books and has a photographic blog named The Diary. Since 2012 he has been the creative director of Yves Saint Laurent.
