44. Hubert de Givenchy

Hubert was born into a French aristocrat family in the north of the country in 1927. At the tender age of 17 he took an apprentice job with designer Jacques Fath and continued working with numerous couture houses afterwards. He established his own company in 1952 and short thereafter he became the first designer to create a luxury ready-to-wear line. His modern, chic style earned him many loyal customers, the most famous of whom was Audrey Hepburn. For many years he was responsible for her cinematic style. He also had a close working relationship with Balenciaga, who became his mentor. Givenchy sold his brand in 1988 and it is currently owned by the group LVMH.
