Minimalist storyteller, mindblowing and brave, using elements from science and technology

Hussein was born in 1970 in the Cypriot town of Nicosia. Due to political turmoil on the island the family moved to England and attended Central Saint Martins College. His own company Cartesian was established in 1994 and his ready-to-wear line is called Chalayan. His fashion shows are minimalist, and incorporate elements of technology, science and architecture. They also tend to tell a story, usually about culture or anthropology. Despite being praised by industry insiders, he was in debt and had to restructure the company in 2001. In 2008 sportswear brand Puma appointed him creative director and bought majority stakes in his label. Chalayan has staged numerous exhibitions and is also renowned for making short movies. He was crowned 'British Designer of the Year' in 1999 and 2000.
