Macdonald was born in Wales in 1971. He learned knitting at home and consequently became interested in fashion design. He went to Royal College of Art in Brighton. After graduation he worked for Chanel and Alexander McQueen, whom he followed as the chief designer of fashion label Givenchy in 2000. Throughout his career he has been heavily criticized for his use of fur. He has appeared on television numerous times, including Project Runway, Britain's Next Top Model, and Strictly Come Dancing.
