77. Public School

Using the finest fabrics from Italian, Japanese and American mills, and a predominantly black and white palette, the designers create upscale clothing with a cool, casual vibe.

Street-savvy clothing line Public School is the brainchild of New York-born and bred designers, David-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne. The pair are critics' darlings and have won two fashion prizes for their streetwear-infused menswear.

Compared with his partner Dao-Yi Chow, Maxwell Osborne, whose eyes are perpetually obscured behind dark prescription sunglasses, is soft-spoken, at times aloof. But he is boisterous at sporting events. He stood up and yelled, “Are you serious?” when a foul was called, the first of many refreshing outbursts.

From the outset, their collections were a critical crossover hit for established fashion magazines and street-styles blogs. In 2010, they were inducted into the inaugural group of the CFDA’s incubator program. The designer Prabal Gurung was also in the program and was impressed by their vision.

“They are the customer and who they are designing for,” Mr. Gurung said, noting that he wears their clothes. “They don’t need brand ambassadors. People want to look and feel like them. They’re not designing for an imaginary person.”
